United Nations Framework Convention
on Climate Change - Bonn Germany
Another Setback

by Barry Piacenza

An Editorial from Climate Change Economics LLC - June 9, 2010

Recent comments and analysis of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change being held in Bonn Germany have produced disappointments related to the upcoming COP 16 meeting to be held in Cancun Mexico. Remarks by the Mexican Ambassador for Climate Change as produced by the conference are located here

The statements combined with those of the new incoming UN climate point person Christiana Figueres underlined in a recent interview on Grist here

Given the summary of these two statements I am left with the impression that we may not see global agreements from the United Nations in 2010 or 2011 or 2012.

These statements are appalling in light of the scientific data as put for forth by the United Nations IP CC, the United States NOAA, Dr. James Hansen, and Dr. Hansen's affiliation to the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, New York, New York, USA. Dr. Hansen's latest paper- Global Surface Temperature Change - J. Hansen, R. Ruedy, M. Sato, and K. Lowhich which is now before the Geophysics Society for peer review indicates that climate change is worsening at a rapid rate.

Realizing this issue is larger than anyone website could ever hope to have an impact on it is my hope that others involved in the scientific aspects of climate change will lead a coordinated effort to offset these mindsets as illustrated from United Nations. Realizing the largest players the United States, China, India and others need to be engaged in these processes.

This editorial is written with a sense of urgency due to the appalling nature of these statements from leaders at the United Nations. It is my hope that others involved in the positive attributes of scientific climate change will come forth to lead a coordinated effort to ameliorate these kinds of statements by authoritative parties in the United Nations.
